Re: electronic ignition conversion
I was aware that the 351 was not factory the data plate indicates that it was factory equipped with I6 240. One of my questions is how can i determine the year of the engine.

Re: electronic ignition conversion
No idea. I haven't had to deal with a Windsor yet, I'm more of a FE guy. Someone should be along soon to help you, though.randyvines wrote:I was aware that the 351 was not factory the data plate indicates that it was factory equipped with I6 240. when getting ready to order the system (I am looking at the Ignitor II) how do you tell the difference from single point, dual point mechanical advance or dual point vacuum advance? I really want to ensure I order the correct item. I do not know what the year of 351w in my 67 is.
If you want to know what year it is i think the casting number is on the pass side of the block, first two letters tell you year
first letter tells decade and following number is year of decade.
B=1950-59
C=1960-69
D=1970-79
and so on
For instance D4AE-6015-AA 4 is a 1974 block.

Re: electronic ignition conversion
for numbers you can look on the original intake the heads where the spark plugs go in at or i have heard under the valve cover on the head between the springs. and on the block just above the starter.

The "mechanical advance" distributor will be missing the vacuum diaphram on the side of the distributor.
Merry Christmas!

A vacuum advance distributor will have a vacuum diaphram on the side of the distributor like this one:how do you tell the difference from single point, dual point mechanical advance or dual point vacuum advance?

Re: electronic ignition conversion
If you go with dura spark just make sure you get the distributor from a 351w because 302s won't work on the 351w if I remember right.

Re: electronic ignition conversion
A 351W has a taller deck than a 302, which places the cylinder heads further apart and therefore prevents the use of any 302 intake manifold. However, it's not the reason you can't use a 351W distributor in a 302.
The distributor in the 351W is the same length as the 302 distributor. However, the 351W does use a larger diameter Oil Pump Drive Shaft. The larger drive shaft will require the larger diameter distributor shaft. The shaft diameter of the 302 distributor is ~.40”, while the 351W distributor is ~.53”. The 351W oil pump shaft input size is ~.31” and the 302 oil pump shaft input size is ~.22”.
A 351W distributor can be sourced from several stock Ford factory applications; mostly pickup trucks/vans.

Re: electronic ignition conversion
I thought the deck was higher also Keith? I thought that was why you can put a socket on the bottom of a 351w therm. housing and have to use a wrench on a 302? Just wondering.
