First was a mostly stock complete rebuild with headers, clifford 4 barrel open plen, MSD box, holley 390, Comp 252, and electric fan. This engine was was in my 2wd step side, with 4 speed over drive. This engine would put you back in the seat from a standing start. The biggest problem was cold weather. I placed a heated carb spacer under the holley but it still struggled in low temp/humid winters here in Cincy.
My 69 currently has a bone stock rebuilt 300 EFI. Same trans as my 67 (TOD). This engine is driven 40 miles daily and consistanly turns in 20 MPG. It is VERY quiet and Very smooth. Much quieter than the carbed 300. No drivability in cold/damp weather. But, NOOO top end. RPM's above 3,500 just waste gas. I would love to cam and port the EFI engine. It would be a moster.

If I could redo: either carbed with a water heated dual plane, are EFI with cam and port. Either way you go, the 300 responds extremely well to cams. Gearing will make or break the project being in heavy truck. I know nothing about proper gearing :hmm:

I know I said in an earlier post that I'm going the FE route, but I still just can't seem to kick this 300 bug. Nick, this is all great information. Did you ever check the mileage on the carbed motor you built? Did you feel like it made a lot more power than the FI one? Looking back, if your truck was only driven once or twice a week which engine would you prefer?
