Good buy, The crank would be worth it alone. Just do the stoke measurment to make sure it is a 428/ 3.98" stroke. Then if the block is also a 428 you have a great buy there for that price. What year is it?

Good afternoon Colorado71,

This makes me curious: why does the guy want to sell the engine separately from the car? I'd imagine that if it truly were a factory-installed engine, the value of the car would drop dramatically if it were removed and replaced with some other engine down the road.

And although I'm not an expert on such things, that price for the engine does sound like a deal to me! The Steve Christ FE book speaks highly of the 428.

he wants to sell the whole car. the rear end is smashed. and the interior is mouse infested. he told me that he would sell me just the engine and scrap the car if i pulled it out. i have no place to store a whole car.

I see! That makes sense. Mouse infestation and being smashed does change things! Especially being smashed.

BUY IT!!! I just finished my 428 out of a 66 T-Bird and I never dreamed my F100 would move so quick! Sure I coughed up an arm and a leg for a rad rebuild (roller cam, lifters, rockers, re-sleeved, Edelbrock heads, Intake and a Holley Street HP 750 carb) but now that it's done it sure is worth it! Think of it this way, if you don't get it and it's a true 428 then you'll always regret it. If you do get it you'll never regret it.

Here's some motivation for you:

"For 1966 the larger, 428 cu. in. (7.0 L) V-8 became optional, rated at 345 gross horsepower (257.4 kW) and providing a notable improvement in 0-60 acceleration (to about 9 seconds)."

"The ’66 T-Bird sold a so-so 69,176 units but was destined for fame. A quarter-century later, it was a ’66 Thunderbird convertible that Thelma and Louise drove off a cliff into oblivion in the film that wore their names as the title."

From: http://www.topspeed.com/cars/ford/1964- ... 30575.html

Maybe you should buy it all and part it out on e-bay, make your money back and then some.
