1st time timing my truck

need advice, its a 390 v8, do i plug hose going to vacum advance on disturtor and the set timing to 8btdc ,ight

Unhook it from the distributor, then plug it from the same end. You don't want any Venturi vacuum while setting timing because the vacuum could advance the timing and give you a false reading and if you simply unplug the line from the carburetor then you have a potential vacuum leak. So yes, plug it from the distributor end. Also, set it between 10 and 12 BTDC. They run better that way. The books say 4 degrees but they need more advance to run more efficient.

Do you mean plug the hose or plug the barb on the vacuum advance?

Plug the hose that comes from the carb to the vacuum advance. Again, you do not want any vacuum leaks.
