Ignition Question

Post by george worley »

The ignition setup on my 390 that has been on there for many years is a stock coil, points, condenser and a Mallory CDI box. Its worked well without any problems except for the fact that I have to check the gap on the points at least once a year. There is low amount of voltage going thru the points with the CDI so the only problem is the rubbing block wear. My freind has a new Pertonix Ignitor that he doesn't need and I am wondering if I could use it and still keep my CDI box. I don't know if the Pertonix is the orginal or a Pertonix II. I have heard the original one isn't as reliable as the II. The one he has is for a
390. The CDI really puts a lot of voltage to the plugs. Any suggestions or opinions would be helpful.

I've had good service out of my Petronix II. It's been on for about a year and a half and about 12,000 miles. The original Petronix kit would burn up the coil if you left the key in the Acc. position for a while without the truck running. If you put it on, make sure you get the proper coil to go with it.
