Sputter/hesitation off the line, exhaust flutter

Post by 71fordkid »

Hey guys, 71 f100, 302/4spd

Im having a problem with a sputter/ hesitation off the line. Replaced the distributor about 4-5 months ago, and new points at the same time. the problem just started the day before yesterday. I checked my points, and they are completely gone. Theres no pad on the finger that moves.

My dad said there was something he was told about having to put a resistor in the wire going from the coil to the points set to keep it from arcing too hot. Is he right? if he is, where do i put said resistor and what ohm resistor is it?

If not, why is my truck eating points like a kid on halloween with a big bag of candy? Is it normal to go through points that fast?

I also have a "flutter" in my exhaust. It sounds like an exhaust leak, but it come out of the end of the tailpipe. the exhaust is fully welded and there are no leaks. Im running 351W manifolds and a 351W y-pipe narrowed 1.5'' to fit the 302. all pipe is 2.5''. My dad also says this truck has always had this. what could it be?

If you are running points you had better get used to replacing them as often as engine oil. The three month 30,000 mile rule and all that. That is the way they were designed.....they just arent permanent and 4 to 5 months in most cases with normal use is stretching the life of them. Use it much less and you will save the points. But as a daily driver they are quite simply a part of the routine maintenance cost and headache.

Points, plugs and condenser were the standard tune-up parts at 10,000 miles on all vehicles prior to electronic ignition.

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

That's not an oil leak :nono: That's SWEAT from all that HORSEPOWER!!
