carburetor problems

Post by 68FORDJBM »

In addition to my disconntected kickdown lever, I still can't get the carb to run smoothly once it begins to warm up. Is this a choke issue? It fires right up and idles nicely, but as soon as it begins to warm up is runs rough and stalls especially when you try to place it in gear. My gut is that the choke isn't working properly and I'm flooding the engin when it warms up? Plus you can smell the gas from running so rich.

Can you replace just the choke? I've considered replacing or rebuilding the carb but want to weigh my options.

By the way, I'm talking about an automatic choke on a 1968 F100 360.

Thanks in advance!

Take the air cleaner off and move the trottle lever on the carb. The choke should close or almost close. Start engine and watch to see if the choke opens up as the engine warms up. If it is working right it should open all the way up on its own. If it does not you need to check the adjustment and see if its getting heat from the tube that runs from the choke to the exhaust manifold. If the choke opens up it prolly isn't the choke thats causing your problem. It is likely the carb needs rebilt. The engine needs to be cold to check the choke operation.

Thanks George! Something I can check - I wasn't quite sure how to eliminate the choke and now I do:)

Also, there isn't a tube running from the exhaust manifold to the choke. Does anyone have a picture of what this is supposed to look like? Just for clarification from a newbie - choke open means vertical, more air correct? closed = less air?

Go to the thread on page 2 "302 won't idle when it's rainy." We have discussed this issue of carb icing on a couple occasions and from what you are discribing, that could be your problem. It will take a couple days to set up your automatic choke but everything has to be there for it to work properly. You might have to install a manual choke to get you through the winter. :2cents:

When you say 'automatic choke', is it a hot air choke or electric?

Well, there is a wire connected to the choke. I watched it for some time last night and it doesn't move at all from cold to warm.

Sounds like you have a electric choke which needs 12volts when the engine is running to make it work. can you post a picture of the carb and choke? If you want to find out if it is electric hook up a wire from the battery to the wire on the choke ,start engine and see if the choke will now work. If it does work it should be hooked to the stater terimal on the alt.

Here is a picture of my carb and choke. Can anyone help ID the carb type for the purpose of getting the correct rebuild kit?

On some of the Fords I remember having the wire running to the choke housing and still having the hot air tube also. Is there a place for the tube to screw to on back of the choke housing? If yes then you need that for the choke to warm up. I also didn't think a stock choke got a full 12 volts. I thought is was around 7 volts but it has been a long time since I worked on one.
For some reason my 460 with a Holley just doesn't need a choke.

Try hooking the hot wire from choke the the stator maybe marked only with "s" on back of your altanator and see if it will work that way.

I wonder if it's running lean when the choke comes off. Check for possible vacuum leaks.
